The construction zone for a multimillion-pound smart motorway on the M6 between Warrington and Wigan is being extended at the end of the month.

It comes as the National Highways' project progresses to the next phase.

National Highways, formerly Highways England, said it is working to provide extra lanes and new technology along the motorway between junction 21a and junction 26.

It said the scheme will "boost capacity and smooth drivers’ journeys" through one of the busiest sections of motorway in the country.

The project started in February with roadworks between junction 23 at Newton-le-Willows and junction 26 at Orrell interchange with the M58. Work started this week to extend the construction zone along both carriageways to junction 21a at Croft interchange with the M62.
