Warrington is a highly successful business location and is home to the global, European and UK HQs of companies including United Utilities, Electricity North West, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind UK, Sellafield Ltd, Nuvia UK, New Balance, Sonova UK, Cavendish Nuclear, European Metal Recycling and Certas Energy.
The local business base is diverse but is particularly strong in energy (specifically nuclear), engineering, logistics and software. The latter is represented by companies such as Tata Consulting Services, HP, Datel and Dassault Systems.
In terms of key areas of employment; professional, scientific & technical activities represents 17% of employment; and 16% employed in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. Manufacturiing represents 5% of employment with local manufacturers including Plastic Omnium, a Tier 1 automotive supplier and Stanley Engineered Fastenings, serving industries including automotive and aerospace.
Warrington has a thriving economy and represents a major centre of employment in the North West as well as for the Northern Powerhouse as a whole. One reason for this economic success is Warrington’s well developed infrastructure and connectivity, in particular its proximity to the M62, M6 and M56 motorways. The excellent road network means that companies can access a population of over 6.2 million people within a 45 minute drive time of Warrington, and is only a 30 minutes’ drive from the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.
Warrington has a population of 210,000 of which 84% is economically active compared to the national average of 79%. It is a high functioning economy; with an unemployment rate of 3.2%, below the national average of 3.9% (April 2019 – March 2020)
