Warrington-headquartered water company United Utilities has been revealed as the North West’s most profitable business, pipping an engineering giant and a trio of retail-led groups to the top of Insider’s exclusive Profit 50 list.
United Utilities was ranked number one in Insider’s Profit 50 list with pre-tax profits of £341.6m. That is more than double the £155m figure posted by engineering giant Amec Foster Wheeler, which has significant operations across the North West.
Liverpool-based discount retailers B&M and TJ Morris, which trades as Home Bargains, came third and fourth with pre-tax profits of £151.1m and £147.1m respectively.
And the Co-operative Group, the Manchester-headquartered mutual whose Co-operative Food business is the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer, rounded off the top five with pre-tax profits of £124m. In the period covered by the Profit 50, the group turned a loss of £277m into a £124m profit.
