Radio Warrington is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a community radio licence to broadcast on air for the next five years. The team of volunteers are now looking for sponsors to help fund the transmitter costs, running costs and the cost of fitting out a new studio, to be sited in the town centre.
The award of a long term AM licence (Medium Wave) is great news for the volunteers who have produced programmes over the last seven years by broadcasting on the internet and on temporary FM licences. Radio Warrington strives to inform, include and entertain the people of this great town. We have programmes to cater for many tastes in music as well as covering many local issues with topical programmes and regular news and traffic bulletins. We are pleased that we have a local and worldwide audience. We help to keep emigrants in touch with relatives after moving to places such as America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Our coverage of Warrington Wolves and Warrington Town FC keeps people in touch with local sports.
Steve Lewis and Mike Mason who founded Radio Warrington in 2007 have worked hard over the years to make the station a truly community radio station and Steve says “the new licence is fantastic news for everyone in Warrington as we now have a bespoke local radio station which will be full of local news, sport, up-to-the minute traffic news, and music catering for everyone in Warrington. We will be going out into the community with live outside broadcasts and will invite local people, organisations and businesses into our studios to talk to us”
All community radio stations must run on a not-for-profit basis focusing on delivering a service to the local community and in view of this we need to arrange various types of funding to cover overheads. All programme presenters offer their time for free but there will be large overheads to keep the station going. We are appealing to local businesses or individuals who feel they are in a position to support us in any way, whether it be donations or helping us to purchase specific equipment it would be appreciated and we will help promote the business in return for their generosity. Although we do not intend to fill our output with adverts, there will be a limited amount of advertising opportunities at very reasonable costs.
We are awaiting a radio frequency allocation from Ofcom which is a lengthy process, but hopefully before the end of the year everyone in the town will be able to listen to Radio Warrington in their car, at home and at work and we will be broadcasting 24 hours a day all year round. Everybody agrees that a town as large as Warrington deserves a local radio station run by Warrington people for Warrington people.
Radio Warrington would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us for the last 7 years.
